Its The Infrastructure, Stupid!

Okay, I know that is a take away from 1980 but, I was there and I am using it. As the winter storms rage on there is a lot of conversation of the drought in California, or the Snow Melting in Buffalo, or the Bridge Collapse in Pittsburgh all these are relating to Infrastructure.

As 2023 drags us through the weather related disasters one after another its going to highlight and pinpoint pressure points of infrastructure weakness.

Case in point, the drought in California is not over because as of November 2022 more than 3/4 of the water table wells were dry like cracked bone dry. The population is just hovering around 40 Million by recent estimates and the infrastructure for water to serve the residents was built for about 25 Million people. So, the water tables and wells have to be refilled and let's just check on some levees and dams that have been overrun by literal water. The entire coast of California has been battered and another storm however tame is still coming.

The Snow Melt in Buffalo resulted in flooding because the snow literally could not be moved and sewer systems were overrun by so much water. As residents and cities tried to prevent water coming in it was everywhere because the pumps are only built to move X gallons of water and there was XXX gallons of water in the streets and towns.

The Bridge Collapse in Pittsburg is just that age of infrastructure and while there may be an nefarious element, rust is pretty bad too. Given that in the past couple of years, overpasses and pedestrian bridges have collapse (Florida) one has to ask, where are the engineers? I am not talking about software engineers I am talking about structural and mechanical engineers. People who help build things!

These examples point to how infrastructure works because A.I. might be able to tell you a story about a house, it can't build one (yet) and there still need to be someone to make sure balance and measure.

Even during the summer Boiling Water advisory happens from Michigan to Tennessee and even here in California because infrastructure includes sanitation and transportation of it and those systems are becoming frequently older and older.

So, check your own pipes and look at how to improve the actual infrastructure in your town or city. Next time, you complain about the electricity being out, your storm drain overrun or even no water coming from your faucet its the infrastructure!
