Food Haul?
This is about $60 worth of food. Its mostly canned vegetables and there was a couple of deals. While I think this is prudent to do every once in a while there is real food insecurity due to the current regime inability to agree on anything.
So, to go through it basically what I did was I went around to the grocery stores and got some deals. There was 6 cans of tomato sauce for $1 at Grocery outlet. 4 cans of tuna for $5 at FoodMaxx. 4 cans of Kidney Beans for $5 at Safeway. I picked up some odds and ends like Cream of Jalapeno soup or sliced mangos. I grab a couple of ready rice (90 seconds in the microwave ) at dollar tree for $1.25 and add that to the numerous cans of vegetables.
One "dessert" I make is cranberry sauce, mandarin oranges, and pineapple chunks mixed together. I am going to try that with pears or peaches this time around. I have lots of pasta like the Grocery Outlet has .50 bags of pasta for like $3 I grabbed six bags of macaroni, shells, and spaghetti to use with the tomato sauce.
Basically, I will put two cans of vegetable mix together and add it to a can of condensed Chicken and Rice soup. I take a can of condensed cream of mushroom and add a can of corn and kidney beans and then add in ground turkey meat for a meal.
The dried beans were a possibility of actually making a taco bowl but first I am going to try to make some chili.
Because if anything I know I can make beans and rice but I might need to admit I don't do it very well.
I also have to learn or relearn portion sizes. I have a lot of containers for meal prep but when making my taco bowl I am adding a can of beans, a can of corn, a can of tomatoes, a pound of meat, cheese ( a LOT ) and a whole package of rice. Keeping these items separate seems good but when you put it all together its a big heavy container. Equally, salsa is needed.
My hope is I can cut my grocery bill in half and to lose some weight by just getting a few items like a dozen eggs or a couple of chickens. My holiday dinners use to be so big but, I am going to try to make a cake and then donate the cake pan away.
I hope this bunch of food to last me about three (3) months if I am just cooking for me.
If you like to donate to food pantries please consider giving them money instead of food because like the 6 cans of tomato sauce those were expiring in December so I might make a lot of pasta to get through those cans.
