What I would do if I lost my job tomorrow?
Its an honest question and sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't just prepare better for the opportunity that would happen eventually.
Like every other earthquake in one's life ( what do you call it? ) there is being prepared and then the reality of when you go to check your earthquake kit you find you dismantled it to get the can opener out and now the water purification tablets and the salt packets are mixing together. Why isn't the duct tape still in its packaging?
I think you get the idea, sometimes you have to practice the fire drill so you know what happens during a fire. Honestly, my first step would be to ask for a reference letter unless I am really in the wrong or something is horribly happening I would ask for a letter of reference. Simply, if to avoid having to worry about what my now former employer would state.
Next, and this is just me in the San Francisco Bay Area I would probably go home and just take a shower and fix myself something to eat and go on Bluesky see if anyone else lost their job.
I am not announcing to the world that I am #opentowork on LinkedIn but, I will put an end date in my profile ....eventually.
Basically, the next day I am logging into LinkedIn, Craigslist, and Eventbrite. I am checking my calendar and seeing how many days till the end of the month. I check my bank and credit cards and savings. I have to pay rent do I have enough to cover it? If I do, I clock that money aside.
Now, you are wondering about my final check usually you should receive a final check and you can always ask for one especially if you are in the wrong but my experience is I will receive a final check on my last pay period if I am in between and usually I am discussing PTO and any benefits owed at that time too.
Next, the Calendar gets reviewed 1. What Bill is Do and How many days do I have to pay
I am also checking Lending Tree for a personal loan because if I have Rent or Mortgage and
Credit Cards I know I can go here and get at least checked what I can afford. $600 doesn't seem like a lot but it can help pay down an miscellaneous bill or pay for a new suit.
Now, LinkedIn Job Site has been FLOODED with temporary agencies but, I am going to go ahead and sign up for LinkedIn Premium for a free month subscription because I need to outreach to hiring managers of jobs quickly. Also, I want to be available to be reached on LinkedIn. The second reason for the subscription is to do a skills test and have those results available to share with prospective employers. Plus, another resource for references because you are going to need them. LinkedIn is also good for following companies and its a quick way to find a job if you follow that really cool company because all the info will be on the follower feed.
Next, I am going to punch up Craigslist website go to gigs type in immediate and click search and see what is available and start searching for those positions that I would be available. $100 for two hours of work or more helps keeps you busy.Because you are going to be depressed and sad and disappointed. This is going to happen whether you like it or not. Now, the Eventbrite is going to be exhaustive and tedious but if you can try to find an event either in skill building or networking but I DO NOT PAY for these events unless its within a $10 or its a nonprofit doing it. No to Dianetics though you probably won't be the only one there wondering if this is really going to work.
Also, as I have said in the past I am going to look for volunteer opportunities because I have to flex my skills while I am looking for a job.
But, that will be the first full day and I can just take a the day because tomorrow is when I am going to start the volunteering gig search with the purpose of finding a job. That means I am looking at volunteering for events or office help that will reuse my existing skills. That's the opportunity in volunteering because you can build a network and share your skills with an organization.
